Special Event: Fairfield Beach Cleanup

Quote of the Week

"The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor."

Special Event: Fairfield Beach Cleanup; This Sunday at 9am

Our SMA community providing support to those in need.

We've had a devastating couple of weeks to contend with in Fairfield County.  As many of you are aware, we have students who have lost their valuables and homes during Hurricane Sandy.

The Fairfield Beach area is still in shambles, but there has been enough 'repair' to allow us the opportunity to pitch in and help with the clean-up efforts!   There are many organizations which are seeking funds to aid the relief effort.   We would like extend a helping hand as well.

We are humbly asking for you to volunteer your time in order to help your neighbors.

We will be meeting at the school  on Sunday at 9am.  Master Dan is providing all volunteers with bagels and coffee.  We will then car-pool to the beach at 9:30 and begin with the cleanup effort.

Master Dan has put together a Facebook Event in order to help the folks in the affected areas of Fairfield Beach.  If you are on Facebook, please share this event with your friends, and consider joining our efforts.  Please plan on bringing rakes, shovels, work gloves - anything that will help to assist in the cleanup.

If you are not on Facebook, but would like to join us, simply email Kailen, so we can have enough food for volunteers.

On behalf of the entire staff at Stryker Martial Arts, THANK YOU for joining us in this effort!

Quote of the Week

"You are never too old to set another goal, or to dream a new dream."

Karate News
The Goals We Set are the Goals We Get!

Goal setting is a highly valuable skill, that not only benefits adults, but kids as well.

As we enter the third week of the month, students are beginning to count their stripes a little more earnestly at the end of each class. The instructors wrap their belt with a new stripe and they once again ask, "How many more do I need?" "Am I going to test this month?" The eagerness to test is understandable; testing, after all, is an achievement and the indication of progress. Every student wants this. As instructors we want this for our students too.

Do you know the 3 parts of a goal that is imperative for achieving it?  Our students do!

Earning a next rank is invaluable practice at goal setting. It gives students the opportunity to experience the various elements of a well-defined goal. For example, a good goal is specific. The overall goal may be Black Belt, but the short-term specific goal is the next rank. A good goal has a timeframe and steps to take within that timeframe. The action step is "come to the required number of classes, participate and practice." We clearly provide the timeframe within which to do this. Finally, a good goal is measurable. Students can figure out how close they are to achieving it by counting their stripes, plus there is a very measurable indicator of whether or not they reached their goal—they are either standing there at the end of testing wearing their new belt or they're not.

It's the little things we do every day that help us to achieve our goals - even though they may seem insignificant at the time.

Regardless of where students are within the testing process (just tested, getting ready to test, or in the interim working on accumulating classes), they can take the guesswork out of achieving their next rank. Parents have the ability to help make this possible. We invite students and their parents to clearly map out the path to a student's next rank. Count classes, make up one's missed, and stay on track. That feeling of accomplishment students get at the end when they're standing next to all the other people testing, getting their new belt tied around their waist, is worth it.

Ode to the Moms: Making Time for "Me" Time

I used to spend most waking hours involved in doing things for everyone, but myself.

I found time to be a mom, wife, daughter, friend, and employee/co-worker, but rarely did I find time to do things for Karina.  As I turned Forty, I was feeling it – both physically and emotionally.  Enough!!

Are you feeling it too? For instance, you really don't feel well for several days, and yet you continually say 'if I'm not feeling better by Monday; if I'm not better for Wednesday, if I'm not better by Friday, I'll go to the doctor.' You just "deal with it. There's no time to be at the doctor. I gotta to this, that, and the other thing. Right? We ALL do it!

The same can be said for physical fitness. I'll start next month. I'm going to start really working out HARD right after this event, that event, for this event, that event, this holiday... you get the picture.

I recently saw something that said:  “I don’t find time to work out, I make time.”
That’s me.  I came to the point, several years ago, where I realized that I wanted to make the effort to make time to better myself. Most every time I work out, I am fully committed to my workout.  For forty-five minutes, I can only think about the task at hand – my workout.

Kickboxing isn't just about the physical activity (although, that part rocks!); it’s also about the mental activity.

When I'm in class, I don't think about errands, money, family, that ever-growing shopping list, or my lack of time; I only think about the combination that we are working on.

Both my focus and multi-tasking skills have been taken to a new level.  Now not only can I do things that I could only imagine doing years ago, I have made a commitment to myself, and I don’t spend a whole lot of time making excuses – I save that time and energy for something more worth my brain space.

Karate News

When was the last time you saw a group of kids who were dedicated, driven, and achieving success?

The last Thursday of each month is testing at SMA, and it presents both students who are testing, and their parents, with a wonderful opportunity to express and receive gratitude respectively.

Does your child have an "Attitude of Gratitude?"

At the end of each test, we ask students to "sit on their 'x' and close their eyes."  Then we invite the parents out on the mat and ask them to sit in front of their child.  When the students open their eyes, they see their parents sitting in front of them holding the new belt, not the instructors.  One of the main reasons for doing this is because we want students to have a chance to thank their parents for everything their parents have done for them throughout the past months.

You have a Highly-Trained Team of Professionals here to ensure your child's development!

While the instructors provide martial arts instruction on the mat, we know that a student's achievement in karate is made possible by many other people as well.  In particular, we know children's success in karate is due in large part to the committed adults in their lives: the adults that drive them to each class, that make sure their uniform is clean, that sit in the waiting room and support them when they try a new technique.  We recognize this and we want our students to recognize this.  We look forward to many more tests with our students - many more times for them to tell their parents "thank you."

-Ms. Kristin and Ms. Sarah

Are you a parent who is serious about your child's Character Development?

Kickboxing News

We've recently been working on intention.  You've heard us talk about its importance hundreds of times, and yet we seem to underestimate its value on the mat.

This is a little golden nugget that you already have!

How many times do you combine tone of voice and facial expression to get a point across to your kids that you are serious?  How about to a co-worker?  A friend?

Ultimately, you say or do something to drive a point home by putting some "oomph" behind your words or actions. The fact is, you use intention all the time!  I invite you to do it on the mat as well.

What you experience and the way you train on the mat directly translate to how you are in life.  I think you have already experienced this.  So my question to you is this...

Is there any other place in life where having a little more intention would serve you?  Would improve a circumstance?  A level of communication?

Do you think that if you applied yourself in this way, that you would start to break through that plateau and begin seeing physical transformation again?

I invite you to try.

Intention is the kind of energy that will create a stronger impact both physically and mentally in your kickboxing.

When you come in this week, try it out!  Really!

Ask Master Dan

Master Dan,

What is the purpose of handing out stripes after every class?

We hand out stripes after every class for a couple of reasons.
First, it is a mini-reward for students and lets them stay focused on the goal of achieving their next rank.  The process of achieving a greater goal - like achieving your Black Belt - is simple.  Start by breaking it down into smaller parts, achieve those smaller parts and eventually you will achieve the larger aim.  So, we have taken care of this process for you through stripes and belts.  By looking at stripes and belts, a student could actually plan out their entire martial arts training to Black Belt.  They could easily determine the month they would achieve their Black Belt.

Secondly, it eliminates instructor discretion.  We used to only give 3 stripes per rank.  These stripes were handed out based on the opinion of the instructors and if the student met the intended requirements of skill in order to progress.  While this was a very effective system, it created many problems with parents.  Too many parents want their kids to receive all the rewards and awards as fast as they can for fear that someone may realize their child is less than perfect (most people have been qualifying this as entitlement but it is inaccurate).  It's just fear.  Fear that their child/children weren't born with incredible martial arts skill or basketball skill or even scholastic skill.  And that some things their kids are simply going to have to work on and even practice in order to get better.
Therefore, when a child was told to work on something and make it better before they received a stripe, many parents would begin arguing with instructors.  They would get scared that their fear was becoming a reality.  Whereas, we were simply talking about reality - that practice makes things better.  I understand it, but wasn't willing to fight this illusion.

For adults, we went to daily stripes to eliminate a similar headache.  Many adults come into the martial arts in their 30's, 40's, and even 50's.  At this point, they have usually developed one or more ailments.  Often times their bodies have tightened up and their flexibility has suffered.  They need to overcome different obstacles in order to achieve a level of proficiency in the martial arts.  Every time they were told to wait, they too got scared.  Scared that this ailment, physical or otherwise, was going to negatively impact the rest of their life.  The lack of receiving the stripe pointed to this and they got upset.  Again, all we were saying was, work on a specific thing and you will receive the stripe.  What they heard was, "I will never make it."  Again, I understand.  Therefore, we eliminated that system and replaced it with daily stripes

Now it is up to parents and students to take an honest look in the mirror and determine the student's actual level of skill and proficiency rather than the instructors telling them.  This has led to a secondary problem where students, parents, and even grandparents are putting the responsibility for the student's performance on the instructor rather than on the student themselves.  It is an interesting problem that I haven't figured out yet.  The best I can do is to tell you that if you or your child aren't performing, take responsibility and change it.  Don't think that the instructors have the responsibility because we don't.  All we can do is show you the way.

"Why do Bo-Blacks get monthly stripes?"

This is simply common sense.  If we gave them a stripe for every class, in 6 months their belt would be nothing but tape.  Having said that, we also do it because after training for 2 years in our program (and earning their bo-black), children should be able to wait 30 days before needing a "pat on the back" and a reward.  We have found this to be true and the system works beautifully.  Where problems arise with this system is not actually with the kids, but again with the parents thinking that their kids are entitled to more rewards more often.  What they fail to realize is that the more rewards you give, it dilutes the reward.  Hence the reward has less impact on the positive side.  And it has less motivation associated with it if you were to use it to attempt to modify behavior.  The best advice I can give parents is simply to trust that we know what we are doing.  That we have been doing this for a long time and our program works.

A special note to parents:  The best way to understand why we do what we do is to get on the mat yourself.  We are providing the opportunity for parents to train in our program during the month of October.  Simply speak with Ms. Kristin in order to get started, or email Kailen.  We also have a family class on Wednesday that is free to you and an added benefit of participating in our program.

Sincerely,
Master Dan

Quote of the Week

"Every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent success."

Karate News

We think it's important for our students to learn respect.  While they have an opportunity to strengthen this behavior on the mat, we believe it is equally important for them to carry this behavior beyond the dojo into the two places where they spend the most time -- home and school.

Last week our mat chats at the end of class focused on "saying 'please' and 'thank-you'."  In particular, we focused on helping the students become aware of all the opportunities they have at school each day to show respect and use these manners.  Some daily opportunities are obvious: use "please" when asking the teacher for something, such as a pencil or book, and use "thank you" once receiving it.  Other daily opportunities are less obvious for students and it was these that we especially focused on last week: saying "thank you" to the people working in the cafeteria, saying "thank you" each day to the bus driver, using "please" when asking to join in a game with a group of friends, saying "thank you" to the custodians.

Many people help our students grow and learn, and we know these people deserve respect.  We want our students to learn to recognize this too.

-Ms. Kristin and Ms. Sarah

Kickboxing News

If you attended class last week (and we hope you have), your left arm is probably feeling the brunt of the new combination.  But fear not, as the combination expands there will be an opportunity for other appendages to be sore as well.

Are you feeling confused about this new combination?  I am.  The combination itself is not really new to most of us, but it sure does feel it.  Do you know what's good about that?  It means that you're learning something.  You are learning to use the skills that you already have in a different order than you may normally prefer.

What we are doing is giving our brains permission to be stretched and to arrive at a conclusion from a different angle.  In essence, it's a workaround.  It's always better to have more than one option that to be stuck with only one way to get the job done, no?

Maybe select a portion of the combination that is giving you the most problems, and just work on that.  I am sure that if you work on that one piece and gain confidence the rest of it will fall into place.

-Ms. Karina

Are You Prepared?

Scary Statistic: While violent crime is down 4% nationwide as compared to last year, robbery and sexual assault is on the rise in our area.

We aren't interested in creating fear; we are interested in teaching preparedness, and instilling confidence in our students.  Learn what you should look for, and what YOU can do in order to tip the scales in your favor, should you be involved in an assault.

Due to the success of our Street Fighting Seminar last month, we are adding a second installment, which is limited to only 10 participants.  Join us on Sunday September 30th at 11am for part 2 of our Street Fighting Seminar.  If you were unable to attend the first seminar, don't miss this opportunity!  The cost for participation is $20, and the seminar is open to both students and non-students.

We will also be running a Knife Fighting Seminar on Sunday September 30th, at noon.  The cost for participating in this seminar is $40, which includes a training knife ($20, if you already have a training knife).  There are only 10 spots left for this seminar, which is open to both students and non-students.

Email Kailen or get in touch with a staff member today in order to get on the list, and get confident.

Who is Ready for Testing?

Testing is this Thursday!

Our karate test for kids (yellow belt through Brown Belt) is at 6pm, and our kickboxing test for adults is at 7:15pm.  Bo-Black kids will test for their progress stripe on Saturday.

We will not be running regularly scheduled classes on Thursday.  Only kids who are testing for their next rank will be allowed to participate, please be sure your child has received the appropriate number of stripes!

Kickboxing students who aren't testing may participate in the class at 7:15pm.

Off the Mat - Training
Tested in the Real World
"High Expectations"

I’m always on the fence about whether or not I’m happy with people’s high expectations of me.  There is a part of me that would really rather that everyone have average expectations of me so that I can sit and wallow in my own “I don’t wanna’s”.  I like living in the town of Complacency.  It is just lovely there. It’s always the same - never better, never worse.

If that actually were the case, and I did prefer that, I never would have accomplished as much as I have in the dojo and out.  How would it look if every time I worked out or ran a workout and I was just there, taking up space?  Blech!  And in turn, how do you think it looks when you come in not wanting to give your best?  Blech!  Let’s face it - complacency doesn’t look good on anyone.  The good news is that we don’t have a lot of that.

We don’t expect you to do things in class that you are not capable of, ever.  You may not be great at them and you may not like doing them, but it’s not because you can’t do them.  We do, however, anticipate that when you show up, that you want to be there and that you are willing to give 100% for forty-five minutes.  We’ve said it a million times…it’s your martial arts and your workout.   If you give it everything, you’ll assuredly reap the benefits – long and short term.

In our world, the higher your rank is, the greater the expectation that is put on you.  So with that in mind, I challenge the higher ranks to lead by example and dare I say, hold yourself to a higher standard.  If your rank isn’t that high yet, well just know that it will be higher sooner than you think and if you pick up those good habits now, your actions will benefit you down the road.

We are all put in a position that we could lead by example.  It doesn’t have to be anything big!  It could be as simple as introducing yourself to a new student (or coworker or neighbor) or maybe cheering on your partner when you feel they want to give up.  It is little things like that that catch on and spread to everyone.

- Karina Gramesty

Seminar Schedule!

Street Fighting Follow-up - Sunday 9/30 at 11am

Knife fighting Seminar - Sunday 9/30 at 12pm

Participation in the street fighting seminar is $20, participation in the knife fighting seminar is $40, which includes a training knife.  Space is extremely limited for both events!  See a staff member today!
